The Black Watch regiment
is to be sent from the relative safety of the area around Basra
in the South of Iraq, up to the more dangerous region west of
Baghdad to provide cover for a much-heralded US army assault on
the rebel stronghold of Falluja. It is widely suspected in the
UK that this military decision has a crude political facet to
it - to present evidence to an amnesiac and news-starved US electorate
that there really is a coalition operating in Iraq, not just the
US army, thereby elevating Dubya's electoral chances at this sensitive
time.
