Chancellor Gordon Brown
announces that the coming year presents a once-in-a-generation
chance to finally provide proper foreign aid and debt relief to
the poorer countries as the British government will take on the
presidency of the G8 and the EU in 2005. His laudable but paltry
goal of persuading all rich countries to provide 0.7% of their
GDPs This comes on the same day that several charities and unions
join together under the banner "Make Poverty History"
- and all this amidst the unfolding disaster of the tsunami which
inundated the South Asian coast causing death and displacement
on a huge scale. It all seems rather shamefully pathetic.
