What is predicted to be
the last cabinet meeting before the announcement of a general
election gathers in Westminster. It is widely leaked that it will
be a discussion of the final touches to the Labour manifesto,
drafted largely under the auspices of Blairite Colin Milburn.
Despite Milburn's influence, it seems that the main plank of the
campaign and manifesto will be the economy (the old Clinton-era
Democrat mantra "it's the economy, stupid"). What with
His Holiness Blair's sense of omnipotence, I couldn't get the
idea of the Last Supper out of my mind - the allusion to betrayal
by one of the disciples was irresistible in this nest of ambitious
vipers. I admit the metaphor doesn't stretch too far, but who
will play Judas? Will Gordon be able to behave himself? [the cheesy
snax refers to the furore over the state of school dinners - in
the news this week].
