In
the lead-up to the debate over the ratification of the new EU
constitutional treaty, Britain could well be the country which
holds up "progress" to wards a more cohesive union beacause
of our queasiness over the "social" model of Europe,
much favoured by the old French-German axis. 'Twas ever thus,
really, ever since Margaret Thatcher's continual "handbagging"
of her continental counterparts. John Bull is seen here as a huge
handicap to the struggling EU nag. The USA leaves it with a clean
pair of hooves, while China sneaks up on the outside, having ditched
its boiler-suited Maoist jockey.
