New-style bicycle-riding
Tory leader David Cameron celebrates the New Year by announcing
his New Year message. He promises that 2006 will be a year of
transformation for his party. He rejects the previous Tory flagship
policy of "patients' passports", in favour of a commitment
to "improve the NHS for everyone, not help a few to opt out".
He also wants to fight poverty at home and abroad and to "stand
up to big business". He also says that the police "should
not be treated with kid gloves". This all sounds remarkably
like a sharp left turn into old Labour territory. Meanwhile, Blair's
message concentrates on sound old Tory areas like anti-social
behaviour, police powers and the fight against terrorism in the
UK and abroad, with controversial reforms in health, education,
energy and welfare in the pipeline. I think I need a compass.
Which way is left?
