The death toll of American troops in Iraq reaches 3000. It looks increasingly like George Bush will send more in - a "surge" in troop numbers - as advocated by Senator John McCain, rejecting the proposals of Daddy's friend Jim Baker's report. He will make a speech shortly, announcing his intentions. The American public are becoming increasingly chary of more flag-draped coffins. Will they take it?
