Elections for English
local councils, Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly all take
place today, while we wait for the Big Announcement on Blair's
resignation timetable. He still plays hard-to-get as his press
people tantalisingly hint that he will not be revealing his intentions
over his parliamentary seat next week (when he will reveal his
resignation as PM, apparently). He may want to stay on as a back-bencher
for a while yet. Just the news Gordon Brown wanted to hear.
The bailiffs remove most of the furniture from Blair's grimy,
threadbare retreat. Alex Salmond (SNP leader) gleefully removes
a map of the United Kingdom; his independence-driven Nationalists
are predicted to be on course for winning Scotland; in which case
it's "Goodbye UK". Gordon impatiently waits for Blair
to give up his seat.
