Gordon Brown hands over
the Treasury wheel to Alastair Darling. In the first week of his
tenure, the bank of England raises the bank base rate to 5.75%
in order to keep the lid on inflation. This will hurt mortgage
payers. With personal debt at the highest levels ever, and the
economy based on a fragile consumer spending boom, the road ahead
could be quite rocky.
